Story Seeds, the Rotaract Club of Bwebajja’s D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) Day at the Pop-Up Kindergarten in Entebbe, fostered a vibrant reading culture among children aged three to six.
Over 200 donated books transformed the learning space into a colorful library, where volunteer storytellers used puppets, props, and animated read-alouds to captivate young imaginations. Children voted on “choose-your-adventure” story paths, enhancing decision-making skills and narrative engagement.
After group sessions, each child enjoyed one-on-one reading time with volunteers, reinforcing letter recognition and phonemic awareness. Intergenerational reading circles paired children with elders parents, grandparents, and retired teachers strengthening community bonds and cultural continuity.
Educators observed increased enthusiasm for independent reading and reported that students demonstrated improved vocabulary and story-comprehension skills. The kindergarten committed to sustaining monthly storytelling sessions and a rotating book-lending program, ensuring continued access to literacy resources.
Story Seeds illustrated how targeted early-literacy interventions can spark a lifelong love of reading and lay a strong foundation for academic success.
